The trunk is dated 1826 below a painted flourish of floral wreaths and monograms over the original time worn green background. The ornate decorative strap and hinges seem to encircle the trunk and set this chest apart from others. Made of heavy oak with dovetail construction, the trunk has a wax finish inside and out, enhancing the patina. The two separations of the wood planks on the top and one on the interior bottom are age related due to shrinkage and typical of a trunk of this age and do not weaken the trunk in any way.
