The elaborate carving that surrounds the arched panels adds decorative as well as architectural interest to this large German trunk, also called a coffer. Trunks and coffers were the general purpose storage of the day, while coffers usually had locks to protect something of personal value inside. This trunk has a wax finish, bringing out the age and beauty of the rich, dark oak wood. The original hand-wrought iron handles make it possible to move this heavy piece. While there are minor nicks and blemishes, these imperfections simply add to the character of this 200 year old trunk. All has been restored so it is strong and ready for use.
