This oil painting on cardboard portrays a Polish officer astride his white stallion in the midst of battle. The officer exudes confidence in both his posture and gaze, saber drawn as he gazes sideward to the battlefield. The window of sky seen through the clouds and armor clad troops carrying the standards/banners intimates the battle is drawing to an end as the clouds clear. The painting is signed and dated at the lower left on the artist's board, hidden behind the frame - A. Zczerbowski 1876 and on the back written Polish it says, " With gratitude on the name day of 19 March, 1877".
There are losses to the gilt wood and gesso frame with minor flaking and re-touches to the paint. The cardboard and frame are slightly twisted. The painting may benefit from cleaning, but we leave that decision to the discretion of the buyer.
